11/02/09 - A Family of Black Belts

A father and his two teenage children recently gained their Karate black belts. Stuart, Rebecca & Matthew Wood from Loughborough were all awarded their black belt after a grading by Sensei Akita, head of the Shotokan Karate Association.

The three have trained with LELA Shotokan Karate club, under the instruction of Terry Corbett (4th Dan) for the past five-and-a-half years.

" It was a great achievement for us all for different reasons " said Stuart (49). " I don't think any of us thought we'd get this far when we started training. I was recovering from major surgery to both Achilles tendons and Matthew and Becky were both very placid, perhaps not what people would think of as the best recipe for success! "

Matthew (13) said, " We really want to thank our Sensei Terry Corbett for his patience, encouragement and for giving us the extra push over the years. We are also grateful to everyone at the Loughborough and Long Eaton clubs who have been so helpful and encouraging. They are great clubs. "

Stuart added, " We are encouraged by these results and hope that others will be prompted to have a go too. It certainly hasn't been plain sailing for any of us; there have been tears and doubts along the way. But I think that is the case with any real success and it makes our belts so much more valuable. "

When asked about where they will go from here, Rebecca (15) said, " They say that we start learning karate when we get our black belt, so there's plenty more hard work and improvement ahead! "

Also successful on the day was Alex Holland. Alex, a junior member of LELA Shotokan club in Long Eaton was very pleased to have gained his black belt after training for a number of years with sensei Terry Corbett.
